We’re planning to ask for volunteers to clean our pews and other surfaces in the church after each Mass (when we restart). This is mostly to save money.

My question is about liability if we do not have a trained, professional cleaning service do the work.

Currently, we rely on a cleaning company to clean during the week. On the weekends, after our streamed Masses, our deacon and I clean pews/bathrooms. We use the procedures outlined by the pew manufacturer and our cleaning company.

I believe we’d get a better and consistent cleaning from professionals (however, some of these volunteers may even be professional cleaners).

Is there an issue with having volunteers, with a little bit of training, clean our pews and bathrooms?

The best advice I can give you is to seek direction from your Diocese Risk Manager.
